Herpes (Shingles Vaccine)

What is a Herpes (Shingles) Vaccine?
The shingles vaccine helps boost immunity against the varicella-zoster virus, which remains dormant in the body after chickenpox and may reactivate later in life as shingles. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent painful outbreaks and related complications.
Types of Shingles Vaccines
- Recombinant Zoster Vaccine (RZV – Shingrix)
- Recommended for adults aged 50 years and above.
- Given in two doses, 2–6 months apart.
- Provides strong, long-lasting protection against shingles.
- Live Attenuated Zoster Vaccine (ZVL – Zostavax)
A single-dose vaccine option, less commonly used now.
Offers moderate protection, typically for adults over 60 years.
What Should You Know Before The Test
Adults aged 50 years and older, and those with weakened immunity, are strongly advised to get vaccinated.
The vaccine is administered as an injection in the upper arm.
Mild effects like pain at the injection site, fatigue, muscle aches, or low-grade fever may occur and usually subside within a few days.
The Shingrix vaccine is over 90% effective in preventing shingles and post-herpetic neuralgia.
Yes. Shingles vaccines can be given alongside other adult vaccines, such as flu or pneumonia vaccines, under medical guidance.
